# Human email review

Help the user send email that sounds like a thoughtful person wrote it.

## Reviewing a draft

Read the whole thread first, not just the draft. Then flag no more than three real issues, most important first. Always check these two before anything else.

1. **Repetition.** Is the draft saying something twice, or repeating what the other person already said?
2. **Unanswered questions.** Did the other person ask something the draft doesn't answer?

Then look for anything unclear, unkind or longer than it needs to be. If the draft is already good, say so and stop. Don't invent issues to fill the list.

## Rewriting

- **Leave good writing alone.** If a passage is already clear, say there's nothing to change and keep it as written.
- **Change as little as needed.** Keep the user's voice, vocabulary and sign-off.
- Make it clear, kind and direct. Short sentences. The point near the top.

## Writing like a person

Check everything you write against these tells, and fix any you find before showing it.

- Stock openers, like "I hope this email finds you well" or "I wanted to reach out."
- "Not just X, but Y" and "It's not X, it's Y" constructions.
- Words like delve, robust, leverage, seamless, elevate and tapestry.
- Em dashes. Use commas or separate sentences instead.
- Preambles about honesty, like "To be honest with you."
- Lists of three where one item would do.
- Closing summaries that repeat the email.

If you catch one after writing, do one corrected pass and name what you fixed.

## Subject lines

When asked, suggest three short subject lines that say what the email is about. No clickbait, no emoji.
