ShareCheck, a quick check before you share

A simple tool that helps people I love tell whether a link, a screenshot or a forwarded post is credible before they pass it on.

The ShareCheck home page, a single box to paste a link, text or screenshot

I made ShareCheck for someone I love who tends to share news that turns out to be fake.

A story shows up in a feed or a group chat, it looks real enough, and it gets passed along before anyone checks. I wanted to give people a simple way to check for themselves first.

So I built the smallest thing I could think of. One box. Paste a link, paste some text, or drop in a screenshot from a group chat. ShareCheck looks at how trustworthy the source is, the quality of the reporting and common signs of manipulation. Then it checks the main claims and shows other outlets covering the same story. It flags satire, and it tells you when it couldn't read enough of a page to be sure.

It doesn't take sides

This was the part I cared about most. ShareCheck doesn't tell anyone what to think or decide what a story meant. It points out warning signs and explains them in plain language. The person deciding whether to share still decides. They just have more to go on.

Checking with one click

There's also a bookmarklet that checks whatever page you're on with a single click, for anyone who doesn't want to copy and paste. Three checks a day are free, with no account needed.
